As the last days of school slowly tick down, parents and teens alike are wondering: What are we going to do this summer? As a librarian and an author, I'm happy to shout: read YA!
As we all know, it’s summer, and ever since the public school system as we know it was instituted some 150 years ago, one of the pillars of childhood has been to escape from the classroom as quickly as possible when the school year ends. With summer vacation comes travels away from home, either as a family group on road trip, to visit relatives, or independently as we head off to summer camps. This year may be the first time your kids are flying solo, which is sure to be a huge, exciting new adventure for them.
Finding the right book is always a challenge, especially if you’re a tween trying to find a good, fun read. With the lazy days of summer come books, so why not try these light reads for all ages?
School’s nearly out, and that it means it’s time for:
Road trips?
Summer barbeques?
Hanging out at the pool?
No, summer reading lists of course!
Summer reading is a long-standing tradition of assigning incoming 6th-12th graders books to read between July and August. The idea is to avoid the “summer slide,” an annual dip in students’ reading abilities over the vacation months, and to give English classes something to dive into right at the start of the next school year.
