mySummer returns to evoke wonder with extraordinary sculptures and imaginative workshops

Anythink’s annual mySummer initiative returns on June 1, 2021, with a new and exciting twist on summer learning. As part of this year’s mySummer experience, Anythink has commissioned a series of interactive public art pieces by world-renowned artist and educator Jayson Fann. Designed as “spirit nests,” these large-scale sculptures – some of which are up to 16 feet tall – are designed to evoke a sense of wonder, curiosity and environmental stewardship. Inspired by the communities served by each of Anythink’s seven branches, each unique spirit nest is created using a variety of natural materials, including redwood, lichen and tree roots. This is the first installation series of its kind at Anythink and throughout Adams County. Two pieces are currently on display at Anythink Wright Farms and Anythink Perl Mack, with four additional sculptures arriving this summer.

Watch the installation of a spirit nest at Anythink Wright Farms on May 5, 2021.

As an artist in residence, Jayson Fann will lead workshops at each Anythink location in June and July to educate all ages about the artistic process, as well as the intersection of art and nature. The first will take place on Monday, June 28, from 10:30 am-12:30 pm at Anythink Wright Farms.

In addition, community members can expect several outdoor and interactive programs and performances as part of mySummer. This includes everything from indigenous storytelling with Red Feather Woman to African drumming with Soul Rhythm African Drumming and dance workshops with Cleo Parker Robinson Dance.

As Coloradans transition to life after the 2020 pandemic, mySummer is just one way for residents to participate in experiences focused on joy and healing. A 2010 piece in the American Journal of Public Health outlines the public health benefits and holistic healing that stem from engagement with the arts. Anythink’s spirit nest sculptures, along with complementary mySummer programs, continue the library’s commitment to fostering creativity in the community and increasing accessibility to the arts in Adams County.

“mySummer is all about experiential learning, and we are thrilled to continue providing interactive opportunities this year through our partnership with Jayson Fann,” says Anythink Director of Customer Experience Suzanne McGowan. “The spirit nests are stunning and provide the ideal backdrop for the creativity and curiosity we embrace with mySummer. Working with Jayson has given us the opportunity to bring something truly special to kids, families and adults in our community.”

Beginning June 1, 2021, community members are encouraged to sign up online and visit their local Anythink to enjoy the mySummer 2021 experience.
