Anythink and Cleo Parker Robinson Dance collaborate for performances at The Armory Performing Arts Center

In continuing to bring art and creativity to the community, Anythink and Brighton’s Armory Performing Arts Center will host Cleo Parker Robinson Dance for a series of workshops at Anythink Brighton, as well as two performances of “Enlightenment” at The Armory Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, April 8, from 2:30-3:30 pm and 7-9 pm.

Leading up to the show, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance will host two interactive workshops at Anythink Brighton on April 1 designed for younger individuals. Two sessions will give students the opportunity to learn about dance and explore self-expression through movement and music. From 2:30-3:30 pm, students in grades Pre-K-5 will have the opportunity to contemplate current events with professional artists by reading, dancing and discussing what is happening in the world and how it impacts their lives. From 4:30-5:30 pm, students in grades 6-12 will use hip-hop as a vehicle to explore dance and style.

“It’s such an honor to collaborate with this nationally recognized dance company to bring the art of interpretive dance to our community,” says Melody Costa, children’s guide at Anythink Brighton. “The Cleo Parker Robinson Dance workshops will be interactive, combining literature, movement and the arts together in a meaningful way.”

“Enlightenment” will feature two significant works – “Free?” by master choreographer Dr. Lorenzo “Rennie” Harris and “On the Edge…Reaching for Higher Ground” by Cleo Parker Robinson. These pieces will challenge audience members to address social and historical events and their impact on cross-cultural communities. Commissioned by the National Education Association, “Free?” uses hip-hop and dance to recall a series of defining events in America’s civil rights history. “On the Edge…Reaching for Higher Ground” is both a personal statement and a call to action, urging audiences to honor the impact of the Civil Rights Movement while also remaining aware of inequities within the justice system.

“We are honored and delighted to bring our Ensemble to the Brighton community for the first time,” says Cleo Parker Robinson, founder at Cleo Parker Robinson Dance. “We look forward to sharing this experience with all of you.”
