Is May (Not So) Secretly Star Wars Month?
There are many holidays celebrated within the Star Wars universe, like Boonta Eve on Tatooine and Naboo’s Festival of Light, or even the galaxy-wide Empire Day. As fans, we have plenty of ways to celebrate on Earth, too, from May the 4th to Life Day on November 17. Still, many fans don’t realize just how important the month of May is.
Most people with any pop culture knowledge have heard of May the Fourth! In 2019, California state legislature even declared it to be the official Star Wars Day, just in time for Disneyland's new "Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge" to open. There is also Revenge of the 5th (for dark side sympathizers), and National Talk Like Yoda Day on May 21 (for anyone with a sense of humor). Creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, celebrates his birthday on May 14.
Geek Pride Day on May 25 has a special place in many hearts, and I believe one of the more important reasons the date was chosen was because the first Star Wars movie was released on May 25, 1977. In fact, there are many Star Wars movie and TV show release dates in May:
- May 25, 1977 - “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope”
- May 21,1980 - Episode V “The Empire Strikes back”
- May 25, 1983 - Episode VI “Return of the Jedi”
- May 19, 1999 - Episode I “The Phantom Menace”
- May 16, 2002 - Episode II “Attack of the Clones”
- May 19, 2005 - Episode III “Revenge of the Sith”
- May 25, 2018 - “Solo: A Star Wars Story”
- May 4, 2021 - “The Bad Batch” premiere
- May 27, 2022 - “Obi-Wan Kenobi” premiere
But the Star Wars franchise extends beyond movies and TV shows. There are often new May content releases in video games, like massively multiplayer online (MMO) games. “Star Wars: The Old Republic,” a free-to-play MMO, seems to announce their upcoming events at the very end of the month. “Fortnite” already announced Star Wars content in the new season, like Lightsabers and Force powers. There are also countless books set in a galaxy far, far away! The newest novel in the High Republic book series, “Path of Vengeance” by Cavan Scott, is available May 2, 2023.
Celebrate Star Wars at Anythink
There are lists and articles with ways to celebrate like Play Party Plan’s list of 51 ideas, or StarWars.com’s Ways to Celebrate, or Grammarly’s Star Wars Day at Work. My personal favorites are a movie marathon, themed food and casual cosplay (when you subtly dress as a character by putting together an outfit from clothes already in your closet). If you’re into serious cosplay, check out the 501st Legion or the Rebel Legion volunteer fan organizations that make group appearances for events and charity.
Join us at Anythink Wright Farms from May 2 to 4 for Star Wars-themed activities like learning to write your name in Galactic Basic and a green screen photo booth, and May 23 to 25 for trivia and take-home paper crafts. Anythink Bennett will be celebrating May the Fourth all day.

Suffice to say, May is THE month to honor the Jedi, or Sith, or Resistance, or Stormtroopers or Wookies…Whatever you choose from the Star Wars universe to occupy your brain space, I know it’ll be a busy month for me. What are your plans?
