Civic Saturday returns to Anythink

On Saturday, Jan. 25, Anythink will host its second Civic Saturday, a public gathering designed to cultivate civic engagement and tradition. Through a morning of readings, song and small-group discussion, Civic Saturday participants will reflect on the topic of civic resolutions: How can we individually and collaboratively contribute to the communities where we live? Through events like Civic Saturday, Anythink promotes the library as a “town square,” a safe space for people to come together for information, social interactions and civic opportunities. Anythink first hosted Civic Saturday on May 18 with the theme of neighbors.

This Civic Saturday is hosted in conjunction with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA), Census 2020 and Adams County Elections. Attendees will receive vouchers for 50 percent off tickets for upcoming performances of the play twenty50, which will host its world premiere at the DCPA’s Space Theatre on Jan. 31, 2020. Additionally, specialists from the U.S. Census Bureau will discuss Census 2020, including the ways in which the census can empower communities. Returning to participate in their second Civic Saturday at Anythink, Adams County Elections will also join the gathering to share important information on the 2020 elections.

“One of Anythink’s strategic initiatives focuses on building community ‘by connecting people, organizations and agencies with ideas and each other,’” says Anythink Director of Innovations and Brand Strategy Stacie Ledden. “By hosting Civic Saturdays at the library, we’re creating an environment for people to do just that – connect with local organizations and, most importantly, each other in more meaningful ways. This helps strengthen our community and helps us understand what it means to be an active citizen.”

Civic Saturday was first started by Citizen University, a Seattle-based organization dedicated to building a culture of powerful, responsible citizenship in the U.S. To help spread the initiative outside of Seattle, Citizen University trains individuals and organizations from across the country, including Anythink, on how to host Civic Saturdays in their own communities.

“Civic Saturday is a gathering for people who believe that showing up and working together will strengthen our democracy,” says Eric Liu, Citizen University founder. “We connect as neighbors and strangers, we reflect on the moral challenges of our times, and we develop habits of being responsible for each other. Bringing yourself fully into community is a practice, and Civic Saturday is where you can renew and restore that practice.”

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. In order to provide appropriate accommodations, online registration is suggested.
