Bicycle-lending initiative debuts at Anythink Commerce City

On Tuesday, June 8, Anythink Commerce City will debut its new bike-lending program in an effort to promote bicycle accessibility and equity in the Commerce City community. The fleet of 30 cruiser-style bikes will be available free to Anythink library cardholders ages 16 and up for three-week increments. Anythink hopes the checkout period will encourage community members to take advantage of these bikes for a wide array of uses, including commuting, exercise and leisure.

Cycling is on the rise across the country, celebrated for its many recreational, environmental, health and economic benefits. Though bicycling is popular among a diverse population, many communities often face obstacles in accessing bicycles for commuting purposes. Located down the road from the Commerce City/72nd RTD light rail station, Anythink Commerce City is an ideal location to help address what is known as the first mile/last mile (FMLM) transit issue, where a traveler’s first and last commuting miles can create a barrier to using public transit.

To celebrate the arrival of the bicycles, Anythink Commerce City will also host cycling programs throughout the summer, including a June 19 workshop with cycling advocacy non-profit Bicycle Colorado, designed to sharpen urban bicycle commuting skills. Further details below.

“Our team is excited to share these bicycles with the Commerce City community,” says Anythink Commerce City Manager Ricardo Cárdenas. “Whether they’re used for transit, exercise, or just plain fun, we look forward to seeing these bikes put to great use by our customers.”

Anythink’s fleet of bicycles were donated by the now-closed Denver B-Cycle rideshare program, with assistance from the non-profit Northeast Transportation Connections (NETC). Thanks to a generous $25,000 grant from the City of Commerce City’s Derby Catalyst Program, Anythink Commerce City houses the bicycles in a new on-site storage space. Each bicycle comes with a basket, helmet and lock. All Anythink Commerce City customers need is an Anythink library card, which is free to all residents, and available for pick-up at all Anythink locations.
