Anythink to Host Game Design Workshop as Part of 2013 National STEM Video Game Challenge

Sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Anythink will host a comprehensive video game design workshop for middle and high school students of all abilities presented by E-Line Media. The workshop will take place at Anythink Wright Farms on Saturday, March 9, from 1-4 pm. Anythink is one of 20 organizations nationwide selected to host this Game Design Workshop, and participants of the workshop are invited to submit their designs to the 2013 National STEM Video Game Challenge.

The 2013 National STEM Video Game Challenge is a chance for middle and high school students to submit their unique video game designs for a chance to earn recognition and prizes, as well as money for their school. The challenge is designed to encourage science, technology, engineering and math learning (STEM) by exploring students’ passion for playing and creating video games. Students participating in the Game Design Workshop at Anythink Wright Farms are encouraged to submit their designs to the nationwide challenge.

“We are really excited to have the opportunity to host the Game Design Workshop at Wright Farms,” says Anythink Wright Farms Manager Suzanne McGowan. “Engaging teens through play allows them to take their natural curiosity and excitement to the next level and introduces them to valuable STEM learning opportunities. It’s really a win-win for everyone as kids are learning and having fun.”

The Game Design Workshop familiarizes students with the process of game design from multiple perspectives, including game system elements and team member roles and responsibilities. Participants will design both simple digital and physical games, as well as learn the concept of the iterative game design cycle.

The workshop will be one of the first major events leading up to the launch of The Studio at Anythink Wright Farms, Anythink’s new digital learning lab for teens. The Studio, made possible with a $100,000 grant funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, is a dedicated space for students to explore their creativity using state-of-the-art equipment and innovative programming.
