Identidad, a collection of oil paintings from Denver-based artist Arturo Garcia, celebrates Latin American identity from the past, present and future. Hosted at Anythink Commerce City in partnership with the Mexican Cultural Center, Identidad went on display in August and the installation will conclude at the end of this month.

The collection timelessly blends Latin American identity into a single cohesive, shared experience, and featured community conversations with the artist during which the public could ask questions about his work. 

“My great grandmother was Coca (Nahua) and her children were born with the spirit of the Jaguar and the wings of the Quetzal. My blood carries the roar and the flight of my ancestors,” says Garcia. “This collection talks about the Latino culture and what it means to us in the United States, what we carry when we migrate and when we decide to take a look at our roots and our heritage. Personally, a Mexican-born and U.S. citizen by choice, I consider myself to be just another pilgrim in this field we call earth. No more and no less. I am from this planet and of the universe.”

Anythink Commerce City invites the community to visit the exhibition during the last two weeks of October before it closes on Oct. 31. The exhibition is open to the public and available for viewing during all open hours at Anythink Commerce City.

“We are so thankful to Arturo Garcia and the Mexican Cultural Center for their partnership in bringing Identidad to our library and this community,” said Anythink Commerce City branch manager Ricardo Cárdenas. “The public library is a wonderful place to make fine art accessible to all communities, regardless of background or economic means. It is especially meaningful to bring a collection like this into our space that is culturally representative of a large portion of our community.”

About the artist
Arturo Garcia is a full-time artist based in Denver, Colorado, and is a member of the Art Students League of Denver Westwood Arts District as well as other not-for-profit organizations of Colorado. Garcia’s work has been exhibited at The Denver Art Museum, The Butterfly Pavilion, The Mexican Cultural Center, CU Boulder, MSU Denver and DCPA, as well as in different art galleries in Denver, New Mexico, Wyoming and Utah. His collections “Great Migrations,” “Literary Giants,” “Art Masters” and “U.S. Presidents” have been exhibited in public schools and libraries around the Denver Metro Area. Arturo Garcia was a 2018 recipient of the annual Fall Residency to create during the month of October 2018 at Chatteau de la Napoule in France by the La Napoule Art Foundation. In February 2020, his oil painting “Winter Dance” was chosen “Best of Show” at the annual “Representing The West” Art Exhibit and Show in Pueblo, Colorado. Anythink Commerce City presenta Identidad

Identidad, una colección de pinturas al óleo del artista Arturo Garcia, quien vive en Denver, celebra la identidad latinoamericana del pasado, el presente y el futuro. Presentada en Anythink Commerce City en asociación con Mexican Cultural Center, Identidad fue inaugurada en agosto y la instalación concluirá a fines de este mes.

La colección combina en forma atemporal la identidad latinoamericana en una sola experiencia compartida y cohesiva, y presentó charlas comunitarias con el artista durante las cuales el público le pudo hacer preguntas sobre su trabajo. 

“Mi bisabuela era Coca (Nahua) y sus hijos nacieron con el espíritu del jaguar y las alas del quetzal. Mi sangre lleva el rugido y el vuelo de mis antepasados”, dice García. “Esta colección habla sobre la cultura latina y lo que significa para nosotros en los Estados Unidos; lo que nos llevamos cuando migramos y cuando decidimos echar un vistazo a nuestras raíces y a nuestra herencia. Personalmente, al haber nacido en México y ser ciudadano estadounidense por elección, me considero solo otro peregrino en este campo que llamamos tierra. Ni más ni menos. Soy de este planeta y del universo”.

Anythink Commerce City invita a la comunidad a visitar la exposición durante las últimas dos semanas de octubre antes de que finalice en oct. 31. La exposición está abierta al público y disponible para ser apreciada durante todo el horario de atención de Anythink Commerce City.
