Adams County Poet Laureate Kerrie Joy brings her popular Unstudied series to Anythink Huron Street for an evening of poetry and community on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024, from 5-7 pm. Joy and featured poet Franklin Cruz will both perform original poetry, and an open mic portion of the evening will be held to showcase aspiring local poets. Light refreshments will be available from Itacate Mexican Food.
Started in the Five Points neighborhood of Denver, Joy’s Unstudied series connects audiences with current and historic local talent. Whether the featured performer is a singer, a writer who is just beginning their career, or a creative who has established themselves, Unstudied connects people of all ages to a larger community of fellow creatives and art lovers.
In addition to Joy and Cruz’s performances, members of the public are invited to share their own poetry talent with the audience during the open mic portion of the event. Open mic performances should be timed at five minutes (maximum) and must be appropriate for all ages.
Selected as the Unstudied Adams County featured poet, Cruz is a queer Latin dancer and poet born in Idaho, raised in Texas and polished in Denver. Born from an immigrant family, his work has placed him in science museums, environmental spaces, as an emcee, and poet for dance and poetry competitions and conferences. They aim for specificity over simplicity, encompassing self-love, conservation, immigration and culture. Follow Cruz on Instagram at @fcruz_unido.
Unstudied Adams County is part of “Sincerely” – a joint initiative led by Anythink and Adams County Parks, Open Space & Cultural Arts (POSCA) designed to connect the Adams County community through poetry. As Adams County Poet Laureate, Joy will serve a two-year residency from 2023-2025, during which she will advance her art, advocate and promote her literature and work, and serve as a public face and idea ambassador for Adams County.
