For Volunteer Appreciation Month, we’re proud to shine a light on the incredible individuals who support our libraries each day — our Sidekicks! This week, we’re thrilled to highlight Nan H., who has been volunteering with us since January 2025.
Nan joined us after retiring and relocating to the area, and she has quickly become a thoughtful, industrious and deeply appreciated part of our library community. Her words perfectly capture the heart of what it means to be a Sidekick.
What inspired you to want to volunteer at Anythink Libraries?
“I was newly retired and new to the area. The Anythink Libraries in the area really impressed me. The one nearest my home is an amazing facility. I walked in and signed up to volunteer right then and there.”
Can you tell us a bit about your volunteer role — how long have you been volunteering, what do you enjoy most about it, and how does it connect with your personal passions?
“I started a little over a year ago. Every day is different. I help whichever staff member needs a little help that day. All the activities are very diverse. Each has re-energized my interests in so many things (sometimes long-forgotten things). I feel more aware and engaged than I have in a long time.”
What’s something you’ve learned through volunteering that surprised you or helped you grow, either personally or professionally?
“The library is so welcoming. The ‘vibe’ is always warm and supportive and happy. The library is filled with seniors, singles, families, teens and kids alike. I am most impressed with the people who are there on a regular basis. I love to see the families there with their small children, building a routine of visiting the library and reading books every week.”
Can you share a memorable moment or interaction during your volunteer work that has stuck with you?
“I have small memorable moments while volunteering all the time. My favorite thing to do is see a child’s face light up when they see me and remember me and are glad to see me. That’s the best.”
We’re so grateful for Nan and for every Sidekick who makes our libraries feel welcoming, vibrant and connected. Stories like hers remind us how powerful volunteerism can be — not just for our libraries, but for the people who give their time and heart to them.
