Finding Our Place in Nature: The Vision Behind Anythink’s Nature Library

At Anythink, we believe libraries are places where curiosity is sparked, creativity is nurtured, and community grows. As a public library, we proudly provide free access to knowledge in a safe and trusted environment. And as an experience library, we’re uniquely positioned to take this mission even further.

That’s why we’re creating the Anythink Nature Library—a place designed to help people of all ages discover their connection to the natural world.

Rooted in Kinship with Nature

The vision for this new library is inspired by the Environmental Kinship Guide, which reminds us that “everything in the natural world is interrelated and that humans are a part of this as cohabiters.” You can learn more about this meaningful framework at environmentalkinship.org.

To help ground this vision in cultural understanding and local expertise, Anythink convened the Anythink Nature Library Advisory Council, which included Indigenous and Native American leaders from the Denver metro area. Their guidance has played a vital role in shaping the building’s design and spirit.

Supporting Healthy Communities

Nature has the power to nurture well-being—and in Adams County, access to natural spaces is more important than ever. Local data shows how the Nature Library can play a vital role in supporting the health of our growing community:

  • Adams County’s population is projected to grow 18% by 2030, outpacing the statewide growth projection of 13%.[1]
  • In 2021, nearly 1 in 4 (22.8%) residents reported being in poor mental health, up from 16.4% in 2019.[1]
  • High school students in the county get less physical activity than students statewide: 41.3% are active 60+ minutes for 5+ days/week, compared to 48% statewide.[1]
  • Thornton residents say the most important amenities to expand include:
    • Running/walking/biking trails (53%)
    • Natural open spaces (49%)
    • Parks with playgrounds (34%)[2]
  • 52% of Adams County residents consider open space, parks, and trails essential to the way of life.[3]
  • Around 8 in 10 residents support funding for open space preservation and related projects.[3]

These numbers paint a clear picture: access to nature matters. By creating a space where community members can learn, explore, and feel at home outdoors, the Nature Library aims to support healthier, more connected lives.
